Description
Photographic portrait of pupils on the steps of the Spring Street School, Los Angeles, ca.1890. Eighteen girls and twenty-four boys are seated in five rows on the front steps of their school, the girls tending to be arranged toward the center. A young woman who appears to be their teacher sits second-in from the left on the top row, her hands folded in her lap. Most of the boys wear some sort of suit or button-down shirt, while most of the girls wear smock-type dresses. One African-American boy sits third-in from the left in the third row, while a young girl who appears to be Asian-American sits seven in. A young girl in the first row, third-in from the right, has been blurred.
