Description
Photograph of a drawing (painting?) by W. Francis called "The Charge of the Caballeros" depicting the Battle of San Pascual, [s.d.]. The drawing shows a mass of mounted soldiers converging in a confused combat, the Californios (Francis' "Caballeros") identified by their long lances and the Americans by their uniforms and sabers. In the foreground a horse that has lost its American rider is galloping at the front of the charge. In the battle, which occurred December 6, 1846 near San Diego during the Mexican War, General Stephen Kearny led a group of about 100 cavalrymen in an ill-advised attack on a group of Californio lancers; the resulting engagement led to the deaths of around 20 US cavalrymen, along with several wounded, as well as minimal casualties and a victory for the Californios.
