Description
Photograph of a large banner hanging on the side of the Douglas Aircraft Company plant in Long Beach during World War Two, 1943. The banner is at center and shows and eagle flying over a ship, a tank, and an airplane. The words "Defense Plant Part of the Arsenal of Democracy Long Beach" appear on the right side of the sign. The banner is flanked by two American flags. A massive crowd is gathered in front of the plant in the foreground. The plant itself is composed of two long, tall buildings with no windows.

Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
