Description
Photographic portrait of General Fremont, his wife, daughter and friends near a giant redwood tree in Big Trees Grove in Felton, California, 1888. In the foreground, a group of men and women can be seen holding hands and standing in a circle. The men are all wearing suits and hats, and the women all have long dresses. There are more people looking on in the background. The circle of people is standing in front of a redwood tree bearing a sign that reads "Giant". There are countless redwoods in the background. Photoprint reads "Grizzly Giant". Additional information: This image was taken on May 4,1888 at Big Trees Grove in Felton, California. The tree the group is standing at has had three names. Today (as of March 2018) it is called simply "the Giant". Originally, it was called the "San Lorenzo Giant". In 1846, during Fremont's original visit to the grove, it was named in his honor as the "Fremont Tree". The name, "Fremont Tree" was later shifted to a different near-by tree. Today (as of March 2018), the "Giant" remains the largest tree in the Big Trees Grove, which is now known as Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.
John Fremont is the man with the white beard on the other side of the ring of people, facing the camera and wearing a bowler hat. On his right, is his daughter Elizabeth "Lily" Fremont and on his left, holding the flowers, is his wife, Jessie Benton Fremont.
