Description
Photograph of interior view of a factory, showing large hydraulic press at center, May 1937. At center, a large hydraulic pres machine can be seen. A large platform extends from the top of the machine, and parts of an engine can be seen resting on the platform. A ladder adjacent to the machine extends to the top of the platform. Four large metallic supports connect the separate halves of the machine. A large, moving central piece sits near the top of the device. A large plaque has been engraved into the front of this central piece and reads: "Designed and Built by the Hydraulic Press Mfg. Co., Mount Gilead Ohio". Beneath the central piece along the base, six factory workers can be seen gripping pieces of material. At least three other workers can be seen watching the others. To the left of the machine, a man wearing a bowtie can be seen near a pile of materials. Several thin pieces of metal lean against the piles, showing the metal precisely carved with several cylindrical holes. Similarly at center in the foreground, various piles of shaped metal can be seen. To the far right, more workers can be seen near a table full of similar equipment. In the background at right, a ladder leading to a higher platform is visible near several large boxes. In the extreme foreground, large lights can be seen next to a blurred image of another worker.

Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960
Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
