Description
Photograph of the Mother Lode Highway in Jamestown, ca.1930. The smooth broad street was the main business street in Jamestown. It is lined with trees and buildings on both sides. The buildings on the left have covered porches, and the two story buildings have large balconies. Legible signs include, from left to right, "Cigars Tobacco and Soft Drinks", "Old Gold", "Marengo Hotel", "Products", "Goodyear", "Master Gar[age]", and "Guaranteed at least one more mile per gallon Richfield High Octane".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
