Description
Mission San Juan Capistrano, showing ruined buildings and church from rear, California, ca.1899. In the extreme foreground, a dirt road can be seen running at an angle from the bottom-right to the mid-left. In the background at right, a crumbling stone wall supported by large wooden sticks can be seen. At left, a long picket fence is visible. Behind the wall at right, a small rectangular building with a slanted roof is visible. To the left, the back of the ruined church can be seen. To the right of church, a small wall with an arched opening supporting a single bell can be seen. In the extreme background at center, a small dome is visible with a cross at its apex.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
