Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Western Hotel in Sacramento, seen from across the street, ca.1930. The hotel, which was built in 1857, is pictured at center on the right side of the paved street. Automobiles can be seen parked along the sidewalk below. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1876 and subsequently rebuilt in 1878. An earlier record reads "Western Hotel of the 'Gold Rush Days'. Two hundred and sixty-five rooms. An early advertisment: 'There is no whitewash on our walls -- all are newly papered'. Three lives were lost in the fire".; Legible signs from left to right include: "Buffalo Bohemian Lager", "Baths", "Birch [...]", "Wines. Liquors. Beers", and "Clothing. Furnishing Goods. Suitcases".
