Description
Photograph of the Famous Palo Alto Redwood Tree, 1937. Two sets of tracks emerge from the foreground at center to the distance on the left. They run underneath a skeletal metal tunnel with the massive redwood to the right. The tree is extremely tall but thin of leaves at its relatively skinny top. A tree that is about a third of its size stands to the right while a wooded are can be seen faintly in the background.; Picture file card reads "Oldest living landmark in California. The Portola Expedition made camp here and used it as a base for reconnaissance journeys. The tree stood out in valley below redwood line and could be seen from afar. Tree was originally double-trunked, as shown in old sketch. Palo Alto means 'High Tree'".
