Description

Photograph of Consolidated Engineering employee rest area with picnic tables, May 1953. At center, a rectangular rest area bordering patches of lawn in visible. Several picnic tables and benches fill the rest area. A large pole can be seen at the center of each table connected to a large umbrella that hangs above the table. Along the border of the lawn, a line of small trees attached to wooden poles is visible. In the background to the right, a section of a small building with a slanted roof can be seen. In the extreme background, several trees border the edge of a larger rectangular building. Utility poles can be seen to the right. In the extreme foreground, a line of flowers and various vegetation stretches across the image from the left to the right. Also on the right, a large tree obscures part of the image.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
