Description
Photograph of a Merced River gold dredger in Merced Falls, ca.1930. The dredger stands in the water at center, shooting water out of the left side. The mechanism appears to be several incorporated buildings with large appendages reaching out from each side and on top. Rocky banks with a background of trees can be seen on the right while what appears to be grassy swamp land sits on the left. A bank, seen in front, separates the swamp from the calm water in the foreground.; Picture file card reads "Great gold dredger on Upper Merced River working gold bearing gravel. These boats worked twenty-four hours non-stop and employed as many as thirty-three men. Some of these dredgers cost as much as four thousand dollars -- using a six hundred horsepower motor. This dredge is forty feet by fifty feet in size".
