Description
Photographic portrait of Newell Matthews (Mathews?), ca.1879. Mr. Matthews is pictured in bust. The top of his head is bald, and a long, grisly beard and mustache grow from his chin and jowls. He wears a three-piece suit, his watch chain visibly affixed to the second button in his vest. His eyes are large and expressive, and seem gentle. He appears to be in his early to mid-fifties. Picture file card reads: "Matthews came to Pasadena in 1877 and taught in the public schools until 1879".
