Description
Photograph of a portrait of Stephen Clark Foster, ca.1860-1870. He can be seen from the waist up facing to the left. He has a full beard and head of hair, and can be seen seated with both hands on his lap. He is wearing a coat.; Foster, born in East Machiest, Maine, 17 December 1820, came to California as interpreter for Mormon Battalion in 1847. He was for many years one of the most prominent citizens of Los Angeles holding many offices including Mayor (he was the first mayor of Los Angeles after California became a state) and Superintendent of Schools. He died in Los Angeles, 28 December 1898.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
