Description
Photographic portrait of landowner Issac Lankershim, California, [s.d.]. Mr. Lankershim is pictured here in bust, looking slightly to the right. He wears a dark suit and ribbon-style tie, as well as a dark vest. His face is stout and a well-trimmed beard has gone white beneath his nose and on his chin. His hair is short-cropped and combed harshly back, but is otherwise full. His eyes seem gentle and earnest.; Picture file card reads: "Born in Bavaria in 1820. Came to U.S. in 1837 and located in Missouri. He came to California about 1850 and was a rancher in Solano Co., sowing a large acreage to wheat and extending his operations to other districts, finally coming to L.A. County, where he purchased a large tract o land in the San Fernando Valley. In 1869 he became president of L.A. Farming and Milling Co. In 1875, he and J.B. Lankershim loaded three ships with wheat for Liverpool from the San Fernando Ranch. Mr. Lankershim died in 1882, leaving two children--Mrs. L.N. Van Nuys and J.B. Lankershim."; Photoprint reads: "Came down from San Francisco in 1869 and through the San Fernando Farm Homestead Association acquired title to the southernly half of the San Fernando Valley. He was later [...] by his friend Isaac Newton Van Nuys. Through their activities their land became one vast wheat ranch, with Liverpool, England, one of their markets.
