Title
El quinto sol (The fifth sun), Venice, 1992
Description
El quinto sol (The fifth sun), Venice, 1992. Social and Public Art Resource Center, exterior, 685 Venice Boulevard (between Lincoln and Abbott Kinney boulevards). An allegory about Los Angeles, featuring a woman pregnant with the future. She is surrounded by references to street culture. The mural is also a tribute to the art of fresco with representation of Michelangelo's Creation scene on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and modern works by Mexican masters Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. A second fresco, called City of Angels -- painted by seven students who studied fresco technique with Vigil while he was working on his mural, is located on an adjacent wall. Sponsored by SPARC. -- Dunitz, Street gallery, p. 194, #40.
