Description
Libraries educate, governments make cutbacks, Highland Park, Los Angeles, 1995, Arroyo Seco Regional Public Library, exterior, 6145 North Figueroa Street, Highland Park. Portraits of politically involved writers Ricardo Magon, Pablo Neruda,Maya Angelo, and James Baldwin. Library cutbacks are compared to the burning of books by the early Spanish conquistadors and the Nazis in Germany. A library building is blocked by politicians. An unbalanced scale shows government preference for military spending at the expense of funding for school and libraries. Acrylic, by Luis Becerra, assisted by F. Nazarius-Almazol, Sabrina Sosa, Olivia Vargas. -- Dunitz, Street gallery, rev. 2nd ed., p. 122, #16.
