Description
Chinese celestial dragon, 1941, United Savings Bank, exterior rear (originally a restaurant), 951 Broadway (between College and Bernard), Chinatown. In traditional Chinese culture seeing a dragon is a blessing. Here he is chasing a fireball, which represents the raw power and energy of the universe. Nova color acrylic (restorations), 12' x 12'. By Tyrus Wong. Restored in the 1970s and again in 1984 by Fu-Ding Cheng. Sponsored by Mr. Hong (building owner) -- Dunitz, Street gallery, p. 33, #22.
