Description
The Phoenix of South-Central, 1992, 25th Street and Harvard Boulevard, First A.M.E. church, exterior side entrance. On the bottom sides are a black Madonna blessing the forehead of a girl and a saintly man blessing the hear of another child. Above, near the roof, are two angels and a female phoenix. This mural was commissioned shortly after the post-Rodney King verdict violence as a gesture of healing. In acrylic on stucco, approximately 18' x 25' by George Yepes with assistance of local youth. Sponsored by KNBC-TV and L.A. County Board of Supervisors -- Dunitz, Street gallery, rev. 2nd ed., p. 219, #49.
