Detail 1 of 1 of The Negro in California history. Panel 1: exploration and colonization, 1949, Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company, interior lobby, 1999 West Adams Boulevard (at Western Avenue) showing a group of Catholic priests and an African-American family praying at a grave. In 2 panels. The first panel covers approximately 1527-1850, portraying African-Americans who played a significant role in California's early period after the arrival of Europeans. Among those pictured are ex-slave and philanthropist Biddy Mason, explorer James Beckwourth, government official William Leidesdorff, and U.S. Consul Thomas O. Larkin.
