Description
Scenes from English language classics, Long Beach, 1937. Long Beach Public Library, interior periodical section, 101 Pacific Avenue (at Ocean Boulevard), Downtown Long Beach. From left to right: Panel 1: Hiawatha (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow); Panel 2: The Faerie Queene (Edmund Spenser); Panel 3: Pilgrim's Progress (John Bunyan); Panel 4: L'Allegro and Il Penseroso (John Milton), The Vicar of Wakefield (Oliver Goldsmith), and Rip Van Winkle (Washington Irving); Panel 5: King Solomon and the Two Mothers from the Bible; Panel 6: Man with the Hoe (Edwin Markham); Panel 7: The Lady of Shalot (Alfred Lord Tennyson) Panel 8: The Tempest (William Shakespeare); Panel 9: The Canterbury Tales (Geoffrey Chaucer). The artist originally painted 14 scenes from classic British, American, and Old Testament literature for the Lincoln Park branch of the Long Beach Library. However, when that branch burned down several years ago, the murals were moved to their present location. Oil on canvas, 9 panels, 4 1/2' x 5 1/2' to 4 1/2' x 5 1/2', by Suzanne Miller, assisted by Bessie Peirce Heller. Sponsored by Federal Art Project. -- Dunitz, Street gallery, rev. 2nd ed., p. 251, #2.
