Description
Photograph of an exterior view of California's first custom house, Monterey, ca.1877-1890. The two-story structure overlooks the railroad tracks at right across the foreground. A covered porch runs around the perimeter of the second story. A tall flagpole(?) can be seen on the right corner of the structure. A few other houses are visible to the left and across the street to the right. Legible posters on the side of the building read: "Coming, coming, Metropolitan Theatre Co., performed by a sterling company of players headed by Mr. Geller Amiraux and Miss Alma Shyrma, elegant wardrobe, elaborate stage settings, first-class company of artists, don't fail to come, popular prices [...], Monterey Opera House, Wednesday ev'g Apr. 6", "Richards & Pringles & Georgias, one night, Tuesday, Mar. 22", "Coming, coming, Metropolitan Theatre Co. in a new repertoire of comedies, dramas, latest plays, special scenery, elegant wardrobe, elaborate stage settings, first-class company of artists, don't fail to come, popular prices [...], Monterey Opera House, Wednesday ev'g Apr. 6", "Richards & Pringles & Georgias, one night, Tuesday, Mar. 22", "Presenting the comedy drama, The black flag!!, the sterling melodrama, The miner", "a cyclorama of city life, Friday evening May 20, Saturday evening May 21, popular prices 25¢ & 50¢, no recess", and "American tour, Tyndall the mind reader, [...] at the Press Public & Medical Fraternity, world's mystifier, Monterey Opera House, Wednesday ev'g Apr. 6th".
