Description

A jewel-like lighting fixture ornamented with pewter and gold hangs in Doheny Memorial Library's entrance pavilion, 2007 August 20. Inspired by fifteenth-century English glass work, Wilbur Herbert Burnham designed the stained glass in the main hall of the Doheny Memorial Library. The stained-glass windows depict Socrates (pictured, upper left), Plato, Aristotle (pictured, upper right), Moses Maimonides, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Sir Francis Bacon with the seals of twelve of the world's major universities below them: Harvard University (pictured, lower left), University of California, College of William and Mary, Stanford University, Northwestern University (pictured, center), Princeton University, University of Paris, Heidelberg University, Trinity College in Dublin, Universidad Major de San Marcos de Lima, Oxford University, Universidad Nacional de Mexico.
