Description
Photograph of fishing boats and early cars along the pier at Newport Beach, ca.1910. A small pavillion is pictured to the left, filled with beach-goers. In the right foreground, more dalliers relax in beached fishing boats, while a line of early automobiles can be seen making its way between shops and the water's edge at center.; Photoprint reads: "At the time this 1905 photo of Newport Beach was taken, land developers worried that Southern Californians would not buy beach houses when they could purchase horeseless carriages instead. Their fears were, of course, unfounded -- even though cottages then cost a minimum of $500.00. James McFadden had anticipated the appeal of Newport when he bought 1,000 acres of land for $1.00 an acre in 1892. In that year he also plotted the township, leased lots for $12.00 to $18.00 a year, and built an ocean front hotel."
