Description
Photograph of a drawing by Edward Vischer depicting Monterey during the arrival of the United States Squadron of the Pacific sketched in 1842, ca.1932. The wooden sheds and storehouses of the port are visible surrounding the harbor. The largest of the buildings is a two-story craftsman-style house with a balcony pictured at the left, the road in front of which contains a traveling horseman. At center, on the water, several masted ships and a few row boats navigate around the mountains visible on the horizon behind them. The scene commemorates the Squadron's arrival under the command of Commodore C. Jones, who took possession of California for the U.S. (by mistake). Text written-in below the image states this, as well as reading "From the Original by G.J. Denny". Vischer's signature, which usually appears in the lower right corner of his works, instead appears faintly in the lower left corner.
