Description
1959 photograph of California 62nd District Assemblyman Augustus Hawkins, Los Angeles. Hawkins served as Assemblyman of the 62nd District from 1934 to 1962. In 1962, Hawkins became the first African-American Congressperson west of the Mississippi. Also included are two newspaper clippings mentioning Hawkins, "Assembly hits race violence" (21 March 1952) and "[Ilg.] urged to fight prejudices" (18 February 1958).
