Description
Festival of masks parade, 1996, Wilshire/Normandie station, interior west end, MetroRail C Line (formerly the Red Line), Wilshire Boulevard at Normandie Avenue. Colorful depiction of the annual parade of masks along Wilshire Boulevard, sponsored for many years by the now-closed Craft and Folk Art Museum. The parade, however, lives on. Among the characters depicted in the mural are a Chinese dragon, people in African masks, a Native American eagle dancer, a traditional Korean dancer, a group from a Brazilian carnival, a giant calavera puppet, a marching band and bagpipe player, and the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. Among the recognizable buildings in the background are the Craft and Folk Art Museum, the Brown Derby restaurant, the El Rey Theatre, Bullock's Wilshire, and the May Company Building. By Frank Romero. Curved aluminum panel, 60' long. Sponsored by MTA Metro Art. -- Dunitz, Street gallery, rev. 2nd ed. p., 83 #68.
