Description
Photograph of launch of the Intercontinental Northrop Snark SM-62, showing object in flight, ca.1960. At center, a large darkly-colored rocket in flight is visible. A long lightly-colored stripe lines the near-cylindrical body of the plane from tail to beak. Slightly above the right wing of the plane, a small lightly-colored emblem in the shape of a star can be seen. Beneath the wing, a lightly-colored, cylindrical canister is partially visible. Behind the plane to the left, large clouds of smoke can be seen. Far below the rocket in the background, a large field of unknown vegetation is visible. The description on the back of the photoprint reads: "1st U.S. intercontinental guided missile, launched from launching cradle at U.S. Air Force's missile test center at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida. Powered by a Pratt and Whitney J-57 jet engine".

Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960
Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
