Description
Photograph of Lockheed Starfire in flight over a city, ca.1949-1959. At center, a large jet is visible in flight over a populated area. The jet's body is perfectly cylindrical, except for the nose of the plane which appears slightly rounded. Near the beak on the body of the plane, a dual cockpit can be seen shielded by a glass covering. Two pilots are visible within the cockpits of the plane. Along the body of the plane and left wing, an emblem in the shape of a star is visible. On either wing tip, a large metallic cylinder can be seen. The description on the back of the photoprint reads: "New bureau Lockheed Burbank -- New guiding Starfire -- Defense of America's homeland from enemy aerial attack is the assignment of Lockheed F-94C Starfire. Newest all-weather jet interceptor to bolster the U.S. Air Force, the nearly automatic Starfire is radar-guided to its target. Electronically steered rocket salvos, fired from the nose of the 600 plus mile per hour F-94C, blast into target with pin-point accuracy".

Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960
Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
