Photograph of an exterior view of the long adobe of Don Juan Abila in San Juan Capistrano, ca.1867. Only known image of the adobe. Don Juan Abila is standing on the porch of the adobe leaning on the wooden rail. A group of six people stand and sit in front of the porch. From left to right, they are: Chanito Avila (standing little boy), Juan Abila, Melo Abila, Delfina Rodrigues de Abila, Don Chano Abila (eldest son of Don Juan Alfonso Yorba), Vicenta Avila (standing little girl). A horse-drawn carriage is parked next to the porch rail just behind them to their left.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
