Description

Photograph of launch of the Intercontinental Northrop Snark SM-62 rocket, showing the left side of the object, ca.1960. At center, a large darkly-colored rocket is seen moving from the right to the left. A long lightly-colored stripe lines the cylindrical body of the rocket. Beneath either wing, a large lightly-colored cylinder is visible. Large plumes of flame and smoke can be seen emitting from the back end of each cylinder. In the foreground at center, a large metallic ramp along with small staircases can be seen. To the left and right of the ramp, a short, striped pole stands on the edge of a grassy field. The description on the back of the photograph reads: ""rocket boosters ignite while power and fuel lines drop away".

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
