Description
Photograph of T-38 Supersonic Trainer in hangar, ca. 1960. At center, the large lightly-colored jet is visible parked within an open hangar. The cylindrical body of the plane is greatly pointed near the front and much wider near the tail. The wings are wide and triangular both near the center of the plane and adjacent to the tail. On the main wings, a star-shaped emblem and the letters "USAF" are clearly visible. Three wheels are seen beneath the jet supporting it. Two cockpits beneath closed glass coverings can be seen near the beak of the plane.; The description on the back of the photoprint reads: "Light and fast. Sleek lines of the U.S. Air Force T-38 indicate high level performance and light weight of the Northrop-developed, supersonic space age trainer. The T-38, show here in the advanced production area of the company's Northrop Division at Hawthorne, California, has speed and altitude capabilities in the century series fighter class, yet weighs less than 11,000 pounds. Twin General Electric J-85 engines, delivering the highest thrust to weight ratio in the T-38's performance class, led to development of the lightweight, high speed configuration. The T-38 is designed to bridge the gap between primary trainers and the high speed aircraft and space vehicles of the 1960-1970 decade".

Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960
Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
