Title
Launch of the Intercontinental Northrop Snark SM-62 rocket, showing the right side of the object, ca.1960
Description
Photograph of launch of the Intercontinental Northrop Snark SM-62 rocket, showing the right side of the object, ca.1960. At center, a large darkly-colored rocket is visible blasting off a holding pad to the left. A lightly-colored stripe lines the rocket's cylindrical body. Beneath either wing, a large lightly-colored cylindrical pack is visible. To the left of the rocket in the background, large clouds of smoke can be seen slightly obscuring the tail of the rocket. In the foreground at center, a large metallic ramp and small staircase can be seen. To the left, a small striped pole stands alone before a grassy field.; Photoprint reads: "Discloses underwing auxiliary fuel tanks enabling the missile to travel over even greater distances to deliver a nuclear warhead to a predetermined target. Soon to be operational with units of the Strategic Air Command, the Snark is the nation's 1st aerial weapon with proved accuracy over transoceanic distances. It is in production at Northrop Aircraft's unit in Hawthorne. The 1st sequence shot shows the Snark at rest on its launching pad while receiving last minute checks from skilled missileers. Extreme mobility, high maneuverability, extremely long range, nuclear warhead capability, and immediate availibility are important advantages of the Snark weapon system".
