Description
Photograph of Monte Vista School visitors, ca.1911. Four visitors to the Monte Vista School can be seen standing near open double doors: John Frances, Superintendent of Schools in 1911; Edwin Markham, poet; Susan M. Dorsey, Superintendent later in 1924; and M.C. Bettinger, Acting Superintendent in 1911. The visitors are shown with principal Miss Mary Murphy, who can be seen standing near the double doors. All the gentemen shown wear suit jackets and slacks. The women wear long skirts with buttoned blouses, and the woman at right wears a decorative hat. Three matts can be seen placed along the floor.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
