Description
Photograph of an aerial view of the Douglas Skyrocket research aircraft over Muroc Dry Lake, November, 1949. The sleek rocket-powered plane is at center and its nose is aimed at the bottom of the image. It has short, swept wings and a swept tail, while its nose is sharply tapered. The plane is light-colored except for a dark anti-glare section over the nose. The floor of the desert can be seen below the aircraft.; Picture file card reads: "Supersonic flight is routine with the Navy Skyrocket. Designed for the Navy at Douglas' El Segundo Plant, the Skyrocket is part of a national project of high-speed investigation".; Photoprint reads: "Supersonic flight routine with Navy Skyrocket. The Douglas designed and built Skyrocket flies through the speed of sound regularly at Muroc, California test base, officials reveal. In its supersonic flights for Science the 'flying swordfish' was said to perform smoothly and normally. Dual rocket and jet engines permit the sleek ship to take off, fly into the supersonic and return to base under its own power. Designed for the Navy by Douglas' El Segundo Plant, the Skyrocket is part of the national project of high-speed investigation known as D-558. Its sister ship, the jet-powered Skystrea, obtained data on speeds up to the speed of sound".

Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
