Description
Photograph of a group of students outside of Lankershim School in San Fernando Valley, California, ca.1889. Four rows of boys and girls stand in front of a large, two-story Victorian building sporting a bell tower in a spire at its peak. The schoolmistress stands to the left looking right, with her hands folded behind her back. The order--from the frontmost row which is seated, to the back row--seems to be arranged by age, with the youngest students up front and the oldest furthest back. Most of the boys standing in the last row to the right are dressed in some kind of suit. Some of the children in the first row are barefoot.
