Description
Photographic portrait of Don Manuel Cota, [s.d.]. He is pictured from his torso to his head and is facing straight ahead. He is wearing a dark suit, dark vest, dark tie, and white shirt. He is old and has thinning white hair and a white moustache and goatee. He is thin and has large ears and sunken eyes. His home was on the west side of Main Street between First Street and Third Street when the entire district was adobe houses. Picture file card states that: "He remembers when he was a boy, Colonel John C. Fremont, commanding a party of United States troops, rode up to his house and an orderly asked him if there were any men at home. He replied 'No'. The orderly reported this to Fremont with the comment that he did not believe it and advised searching the house. But Fremont replied, 'It is best not to offend citizens' and they rode away". There were five men hiding away in the rear rooms of the house. The picture file card also states that this information came from Charles Prudholme.
