Photograph of a view of Catalina Island looking towards Sugar Loaf from the St. Catherine Hotel, 1927. The large rock formation can be seen on the tip of a peninsula at left. A large, low building with a wide roof can be seen on the peninsula as well. In the foreground at right, the grounds of the hotel are visible, including tennis courts and landscaped walkways. Avalon Harbor can be seen in the background at center, and the large hills of the island rise up from sea level at right. Many small boats can be seen moored in the water around the island.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
