Description

Oguri's “Height of Sky” project, was a two-year dance investigation taking place in the Mojave and Colorado deserts. His commitment to making and finding dance in the hostile serenity of the desert grew out of his intention to investigate the relationship between dancer and environment, and his own identity as a Japanese dancer in America. “My artistic development has always hinged on the specific interaction between dancer and site... I am drawn to the desert as a parallel to my artistry.... I test the notion of taking something to the limit, an ideal embodied by the desert... Chaos is the origin of order. That is where we came from. That is the true nature of dance." - Oguri. Over the course of the two years, Oguri organized and lead six desert trips (caravans) to best facilitate careful observation of the sensational seasonal changes in the desert and their effects on him as a dancer. Each caravan was documented by acclaimed documentary/dance filmmakers Charles Steiner and Morleigh Steinberg, 2007 Feb 16.
