Description
Photograph of a view of the corner Main Street and First Street, looking north from the west side of First Street, January 1, 1926. The entire visible section of Main Street is occupied by a large two-story building with a flat roof and filled with various shops. There are awnings on the first story of many of these buildings, and the street in front of the shops is lined with early-model automobiles. Streetcar cables cross the street overhead, and streetcar tracks carve up the pavement below.; Legible signs include, from left to right, "Chicago Clearing House", "United Cigars", "No Pain Extractions 50 [cents]", "Dentist", "Teeth you can eat with make you look natural guaranteed. 107 W. 1st St.", "Public Bargain House", "Army & Navy Goods", "Dr. J. Evans", "Specialista", "Coney Island Sideshow", and "Signs".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
