Photograph of a view of Venice beach, looking south toward the pier, showing sunbathers, 1938. Clusters of sunbathers sit on the sand under umbrellas in the fore- and centergrounds of the image. Other beachgoers stand along the coastline, which runs from the right center toward the upper left corner. Buildings are visible along the horizon in the left background, while the ocean fills the right background. In the left foreground, a lone beach umbrella can be seen with no beachgoers beneath it.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
