Core Title
Uxmal Photographs
Collection description
"The late-Classic Maya city of Uxmal 'oosh-mahl,' (The current name appears to have been derived from the Maya word 'Oxmal,' meaning 'three times built' or 'thrice-built') in the Yucatan, dates from before the 10th century AD."
"It is considered one of the most comoplex and beautiful expressions of Puuc style architecture. Puuc means 'hilly country,' in the Maya language, and is the name given to the hills nearby and the predominat style of ancient architecture that is found. Puuc decoration, which abounds at Uxmal, is characterized by elaborate horizontal stonework on upper levels. Uxmal along with nearby ruins in Sayil, Kabah, and Labna are all examples of this style of architecture." -- Payne Johnson.
“See also John Lloyd Stephens, 'Incidents of travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan,' with numerous engravings. Revised from the latest American edition, with additions, by Frederick Catherwood. London: Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co., 1854.
