Description
Photograph of a drawing of the proposed Union Oil Building, Los Angeles. "Side view from Fifth street shows auditorium and employees' lounge building (right), main office structure (center) and headquarters for company's sales organization (left). Completion is due early in 1957." -- Examiner clipping attached to verso, dated 7 July 1955.; "Three of the four buildings to be erected immediately in a $20,000,000 program for Union Oil Company of California on the 5-acre Union Oil Center west of the Freeway overlooking downtown Los Angeles. Situated on a hill, the 13-story home office building will be the highest structure in the city. This view of the huge project is looking north from Fifth street, showing the auditorium and employees building at right, home office in center, and Fifth Street building for Company's sales organization. Similar building for Company's Brea Chemicals unit will face on Maryland street. Street at extreme right is Beaudry, with two pedestrian bridgeds across Boylston street. Parking is provided for 1500 cars in a thre-level garage. The Center will be beautifully landscaped. Entire project is scheduled for completion early in 1957." -- typed note attached to verso of 2nd print., dated 4 July 1956.

Description
The Los Angeles Examiner Photographs Collection consists of approximately 1.4 million prints and negatives from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper. It was a daily newspaper, published in the afternoon on weekdays (Herald-Express) and in the morning on weekends (Examiner). The afternoon and morning papers merged in 1962 (Herald Examiner).

Almost every event and individual receiving news coverage in Los Angeles during the period late 1920's to 1961 is represented in the collection. Coverage is broad including crime, sports, society, art, and entertainment. The collection forms part of the Hearst Collection and was a gift from the Los Angeles Herald Examiner Division of the Hearst Corporation in 1978.
The Los Angeles Examiner Negatives Collection (1950-1961) consists of approximately 215,000 4x5-inch negatives from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper.
The Los Angeles Examiner Prints Collection consists of approximately 1.2 million photoprints from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper.
