Photographic portrait of Don Manuel Romero and his wife Dona Gregoria Ontiveros (Ontiveras) of Rancho San Juan Cajon de Santa Ana, Santa Barbara, ca.1870. Don Manuel is seated at left and is looking straight ahead. He is wearing a dark jacket with a darker collar, dark trousers and a light shirt. He has a shiny bandana around his head, and his long, light-colored hair sticks out from underneath. His wife is seated at right with her hand on her husband's shoulder and is also facing straight ahead. She is wearing a long dress with wide vertical stripes. Romero was a captain and a Spanish soldier at the presidio.
