Description
Photograph of a lithograph depicting the residence McFarland and Downey, 1870. A woman stands on one end of the covered porch of the house, while a man on horseback rides towards the building. Nine wooden beams support the covered porch, and ivy can be seen growing along three of the beams. A series of windows are visible along the side of the house, and two small pipes extend from its roof. A small garden consisting of small trees and shrubs sits in front of the structure. In the foreground, another man stands in the street before the house. Mountains rise in the background. Caption reads: "McFarland & Downey".; From a photographic plate with two other images (CHS-4995 & CHS-4996).

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
