Description
Photograph of people waiting in a bread line at church, [s.d.]. In the extreme foreground at left, a metal gate and platform can be seen extending to the left. Several individuals can be seen along the gate looking at the line of people to the right. To the right, a large line of individuals can be seen along the gate and curving into the extreme background. In the background at center, the line can be seen stretching further to the right. Approximately seventy people appear to be waiting in line in the image. The men waiting in line can be seen wearing coat jackets, long pants, and rounded hats. The women shown can be seen wearing long dresses and wide-brimmed hats. To the far right, a few individuals can be seen along a wide staircase. In the extreme background at center, a line of trees can be seen. Beyond the trees, large buildings are visible from left to right.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
