Core Title
Labná Photographs
Collection description
"Labná (Lahb-nah) is a small Maya site in the Puuc Hills region (the only hills found on the Yucatán) of the southwest Yucatán Peninsula, a few miles south of the large Maya city of Uxmal. It is part of a cluster of small sites including Kabáh and Sayil, which were all connected by 'Sacbe' Maya raised roads or walkways between Maya cities."
"Its notable structures include a large two-level structure known as the 'palace' ('El Palacio'), which is one of the longest contiguous structures in the Puuc region at approximately 120 m (393.7 ft) in length. The ceremonial road (sacbe) leads to an ornately decorated gateway arch ('El Arco'). This structure is 9.8-feet wide and 9-feet high, with well-reserved bas-reliefs on its walls."
"The arch served as a passageway between public areas of the city. Near the gateway stands 'El Mirador', a pyramid-like structure surmounted by a temple. Also on the site is the Temple of the Columns."
"The city was built in the Late and Terminal Classic era. A date corresponding to AD 862 is inscribed in the palace."
"The first written report of Labná was by John Lloyd Stephens and illustrated in his book, 'Incidents of Travel in Yucatan,' by his artist companion Frederick Catherwood in 1842." -- Payne Johnson.
“See also John Lloyd Stephens, 'Incidents of travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan,' with numerous engravings. Revised from the latest American edition, with additions, by Frederick Catherwood. London: Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co., 1854.
