Description
Photograph of the John H. Bartle family on the steps of their home, Monrovia, Los Angeles, ca.1890. John H. Bartle, who started Monrovia's first bank with Furtory, is pictured here with his twelve other family members on the steps of their home in Monrovia. An elderly gentleman in a suit and bowler hat stands to the left at the bottom of the steps; he rests one hand on the banister and supports himself with a cane held in the other. Next, a woman and two young girls are seated on the bottom steps, the two girls sitting with a toy baby carriage filled with two dolls between them. A standing man with a long face, dressed in a dark suit and hat, and a seated woman in a dark dress with a floral brooch, are situated at the bottom of the steps at right. Further up, on the next tier of steps, an adolescent boy and a young woman holding a young girl at her side stand to the left and the right, respectively. Still further up, an older man apparently in his forties and a young woman seemingly in her thirties sit to the right and the left, respectively. An old woman, possibly in her seventies, sits on the porch at the top of the steps, in front of the doors. A man stands to the left of her, his hand on the column supporting the porch's overhang, and the other tucked in his pocket. Finally, a seated woman in a light dress and a dark hat sits to the left of the porch near him, finishing out the family portrait. Vines grow in the overhang of the Victorian house's porch.
