Description
Photograph of the exterior of the first State Capitol building in Monterey, 1898. The building appears to have been built in two adjoining sections. On the right is a low single story adobe building with rectangular windows and adobe steps leading to a wooden door. On the left is a larger two story building with a Romanesque façade that includes two large columns flanking the entryway. There are two stairways leading to a second-floor balcony that covers the porch. There is a very tall but flagless flagpole between the two columns. There is brush on the ground in front of the building. Monterey was the capitol of California from 1777 until 1849.
