Description
Photograph of the exterior of the First Congregational Church in Santa Barbara, 1875. The brick church building is at the center of the image, its tall spire rising on the right side. There are several tall, thin arched windows in the wall, and a chimney is visible sticking up from the back of the roof on the left side. There is a man standing on the steps leading to the entrance of the church, and he is leaning on a wall. In the foreground, a pair of carriages, as well as two mounted equestrians, have gathered on the street. The carriages are both open, four-wheeled, single-horse vehicles. The one on the right has two men, one of them driving, and a woman holding an umbrella, while the carriage on the right has a single woman inside.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
