During the early part of World War I, the Turkish government
forced Armenians out of their homes and deported them to unknown
destinations where many thousands died of hunger, of sickness and
by being tortured.
At that time, I, a first year student at the Theological
Seminary of Marash, Turkey, was deported and I shared the bitter
experience of many other thousands. After months of suffering and
hardship, by God's graceful providence, I succeeded in finding
a hiding place in the city of Aleppo, Syria and temporarily escaped
further deportation.

Theological Seminary - Maish was in town, It was extremely risky
for him to visit me, because I was being sought by the government.
Notwithstanding the danger, he ventured to come and see me. After
listening to my story, he said he has information that a strict
order had been issued to the police to search the section of the
town where I was living for persons who have escaped from the
authorities. Therefore, being convinced that it was not safe for
me to stay where I was, he urged me to leave and go with him to
his home. He did not take into consideration the fact that his own
life would be endangered if I was detected. He took great risks
and kept me in his home for about three months until the time that
he could not keep me any longer without being detected. Therefore,
he moved me to another place, and in addition to paying the rent,
he supplied me with money which would supply one meal a day and
keep me alive. He continued doing this for six months, moving me
